A legion of 15 hikers have completed a task that a BC police officer didn't have the chance to before he was shot and killed in November 2017 — they climbed an over 10,000-ft mountain.
The Climb to Remember trekkers — which features members from the Abbotsford Police Department Officers, children of Cst. John Davidson, members of the Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue, RCMP and Abbotsford Fire Rescue — began training in early June in preparation for the hike.
They planned to conquer Mount Baker, which is a 10,778-ft trek to the summit, to fulfill Cst. Davidson's goal of climbing the mountain with fellow officer Cst. Jason Baskin.
“John and I had planned to hike Mt Baker. I remember him looking at the mountain and saying, almost daily, he wanted to be there," said Baskin.
"I want to finish this climb to remember John, keep his memory alive, and fulfil his dream of climbing. It’s very meaningful to me that our community partners are joining us to complete this climb together.”
Members of Climb to Remember summited Mt. Baker on Monday and left a token representing Davidson at the top.
"This was a special trip as we were able to bury a John Davidson police memorial coin. As we look up at this majestic mountain we will know that John is watching over us," Abbotsford Police Department said in a social media post.
In May, the man charged with Cst. Davidson's murder pled not guilty.
