ICBC is warning drivers to be extra cautious as the province heads into winter.
The corporation said that the number of pedestrians that are hurt between October and January is almost double the summer figure.
Icy weather and less daylight are thought to be the reasons for the surge.
According to ICBC data, 1,200 pedestrians are hurt in the fall and winter months while 670 are hurt between May and August.
ICBC advises pedestrians to be cautious, too, by maintaining eye contact with drivers, watching for cars turning and using crosswalks.
Drivers, meanwhile, are urged to take extra time to look before turning and to avoid distractions.
"This is the time of year when police see an increasing number of crashes involving pedestrians,” Ch Cst Neil Dubord, chair of the BC Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee, said.
“We all have a part to play to make our streets safer. Drivers should know that distracted driving and failing to stop for people walking at intersections are some of the top factors in crashes with pedestrians. Pedestrians also need to be careful and aware.
“We encourage them to take out their headphones and take a break from the phone when crossing the road. Reflective gear, particularly on anything moving such as arms and legs, helps pedestrians be far more visible to drivers."
