A traffic stop in the middle of the night gave Prince George Mounties more than they bargained for over the weekend.
According to police, the Prince George RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit conducted the stop of a pickup truck in a parking lot along John Hart Highway around 2 am Sunday.
The lone occupant of the vehicle was reportedly showing signs of intoxication and ended up being detained as part of the investigation.
The RCMP says the male driver’s breath sample registered a “warn” reading, which is between 0.05 and 0.08 blood alcohol content.
As the investigation continued, the man allegedly began “physically fighting with police,” an RCMP statement explains, which prompted the use of pepper spray by the officers.
Eventually, RCMP members were able to get the situation under control and arrest the driver without further incident.
He was transported to the Prince George detachment’s cell block and received treatment for his exposure to pepper spray.
One officer suffered minor injuries during the altercation as well.
Cpl. Jennifer Cooper says this incident is just another reminder that people should be looking for other means of transportation if they’re consuming alcohol or cannabis over the holiday season.
The driver was released later on Sunday with a three-day suspension of his driver’s licence. His vehicle was impounded for three days as well.
