Man arrested after standoff that shut down Hwy 1 near Chilliwack on Sunday night

A dynamic police incident that led to the closure of Hwy 1 through the Fraser Valley on Sunday night ended with an arrest.

Police were initially called to the scene shortly after 7 pm for reports of a “single-vehicle incident” on Hwy 1 near Annis Road.

Officers attended the scene and learned that the male driver allegedly had a weapon in his possession and was making threats.

“After a short standoff, the man surrendered to police and he was taken into custody,” explained an RCMP statement.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing at this time, but the RCMP is recommending charges against the man.

“This was a dynamic situation and Chilliwack RCMP utilized all available resources to protect the public,” explained Cpl. Brett Urano.

“Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the Integrated Emergency Response Team for their assistance in protecting all parties involved.”

The RCMP also thanked the public for their patience while the highway was shut down in the interest of public safety.
