Man dies after 'struggle' with Vancouver police officers in Tim Hortons

The provincial police watchdog is investigating after a man died in a Tim Hortons restaurant in Vancouver.

Officers arrived at the restaurant, near the Terminal Avenue and Main Street intersection, at about 6 pm, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC said.

A man had gone into the bathroom at about 4:15 pm and not left.

Officers from the Vancouver Police Department tried to “persuade the man to exit,” the IIO explained.

“When he did so a short time later, a struggle ensued and the man became unresponsive,” the watchdog explained.

“Emergency Health Services arrived and provided medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
