A man who died after he was likely injured in a remote wilderness area of Vancouver Island this week has been identified.
A GoFundMe has been started for the Leier family, who lost husband and father, Mike Leier. The fundraiser will help the family with daily costs, childcare and funeral arrangements.
“The community has lost such an incredible person, he was a husband, father, friend and a son,” reads the GoFundMe. “He will be missed dearly and has left such an impact on so many people's hearts.”
Mike Leier was found near Otter Point on the evening of March 12, 2023, after he was potentially injured in a wilderness area near Jordan River.
Sooke RCMP say that they received a report of a man requiring medical attention in 8500 block of West Coast Road at around 9:45 pm. When officers and paramedics arrived at the scene, they confirmed that the man was dead.
Much of the stretch of road between Sooke and Jordan River has no cell reception.
The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has been called and is leading the investigation with the assistance of the Sooke RCMP.
“The investigation is still in its infancy but police have no information to indicate that there is an ongoing threat or risk to the general public,” says Sgt. Chris Manseau with the BC RCMP
“The public can expect to see an increase in police activity in the area of Sooke and Otter Point over the next few days while the investigation takes place.”
