BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) is appealing to the public for information regarding the illegal killing of a young Bighorn Sheep.
Suspected poachers were spotted with guns around 10 a.m. on Nov. 11, in an open field near Spences Bridge, just off Highway 1.
The pair both had rifles, and appeared to be in a shooting position, according to the COS. They then shot and left the young bighorn in the field and fled the area.
“They shot a six month female lamb, which was only about 25 lbs,” said Bob Butcher, Lilotte Conservation Officer.
“There is no open season for ewes and lambs in that area, nor is there a limited entry authorization given out for ewes and lambs in that area.”
While there is a general open season from Sept,10 to Oct. 20, the season is only for mature rams that meet a certain horn curl criteria and there's nothing open for sheep.
The young lamb was shot on what was likely private property, in an area clearly visible from the highway.
