Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States earlier today.
Although the inauguration was thousands of kilometres away, it’s a moment in history that has a major impact on the rest of the world, including right here in British Columbia.
Premier John Horgan took to Twitter this morning to congratulate Biden, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris.
“We’re close friends and partners with our American neighbours,” he wrote after offering his congratulations.
“Looking forward to brighter days ahead for growing our relationship to get through the pandemic and build a recovery that reaches everyone.”
Horgan followed up his tweet by acknowledging the history behind Harris becoming vice-president.

He did so by quote tweeting a message from Ravi Kahlon, BC’s minister of jobs, who shared what today meant to his family and his American niece, who’s Black and South Asian.
“Vice President Kamala Harris is showing young women and people from diverse backgrounds around the world what is possible,” said Horgan.
Harris spent part of her childhood living in Montreal and attended Westmount High School before graduating in 1981.
