UPDATE: Fatal shooting at Salmon Arm church not religiously motivated, say police

(UPDATE: 6:50 p.m.) - RCMP have a 25-year-old man in custody following a fatal shooting at a church in Salmon Arm on Sunday.

Salmon Arm RCMP received the call shortly after 10:30 a.m. regarding a possible shooting at a church on 5th Avenue SW while they hosted an event.

According to police, a male had allegedly entered the church during the event and shot two of the parishioners.

When Police arrived they found two people who had been seriously wounded and required medical assistance.

One was declared deceased at the scene while the other was transported to hospital in stable condition.

"While the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there is no information to suggest there are any ongoing threats to public safety," ays S/Sgt Scott West, Salmon Arm RCMP Detachment Commander.

"Police have determined that at least one of the victims was known to the suspect, and it is not believed at this time [that] the event was religiously motivated."

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Salmon Arm RCMP in conjunction with Southeast District Major Crime Unit. Victim Services has also been requested to assist those "impacted by the incident," the RCMP said.

No information about the victims are being released at this time, but next of kin have been notified.

RCMP are responding to an incident at a church in Salmon Arm, which may have been a possible shooting.

RCMP spokesperson Chris Manseau says that they are in the preliminary stage of the investigation, however he did confirm that they have one man in custody.

The incident took place sometime this morning.

He says police do not believe there is an active or ongoing threat to the public. He was not able to give any comment on any victims or their condition.

More information is expected to be released later today.
