Waiting in car ban now officially in effect for BC Ferries

Passengers will no longer be able to remain in their vehicles on lower ferry decks.

BC Ferries’ new policy on passengers who stay in their cars on the closed lower decks of the vessels officially takes effect today, October 11th.

The new vehicle deck policy means passengers are banned from remaining in their vehicle on any closed deck of a vessel.

However, early reports claim the new policy will initially be enforced by a “soft approach”, and there may be some exemptions on a case-to-case basis for passengers who have unique challenges or special needs.

The new policy was not the decision of BC Ferries but a result of Transport Canada’s updated safety regulations to reduce passenger access to closed vehicle decks when the ferry is traveling.

BC Ferries will also ban smoking on all vessels and at all terminals in January 2018.
