More than 20 cm of snow expected between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass

If you have plans to drive southeast to the Kootenays in the next 24 hours, you may want to reconsider those travel plans or leave want plenty of time to navigate the highway.

Environment Canada has issued a heavy snowfall warning for Hwy 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.

As of Monday afternoon, nearly 15 centimetres of snow had fallen near Kootenay Pass on Hwy 3, with a further 10 to 15 cm expected throughout the evening.

Snow levels are expected to rise above the 1200 metre mark by midnight, at which time the snow will likely switch to rain near the summit.

“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” says the snowfall warning. “Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”
