UPDAte: Evacuation alert rescinded for Sicamous mobile home park

(UPDATE: July 6 @ 7 pm) – The threat of a landslide near a Sicamous mobile home park appears to have passed.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District has rescinded an evacuation alert issued on July 3.

Twenty seven properties in the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park have been moved to “all clear.”

The mobile home park has been on and off evacuation alerts for much of the spring as the Shuswap region experienced heavy rainfall.

Officials say that the threat of a landslide is due to the damage done by last year’s Two Mile Road wildfire.

The wildfire burned 2,500 hectares and destroyed the integrity of the ground in the Wiseman Creek watershed.

The damage was so extensive that the CSRD voted in February to restrict salvage logging in the area for the next two years.

For residents living in the Shuswap area, be sure to visit the CSRD website for the latest updates.

(Original story: July 3 @ 3:30 pm) – An evacuation alert has been issued for a mobile home park in Sicamous due to the threat of a landslide in the area.

The alert went into effect on Sunday, July 3 at 3 pm for all residence #1 through #27 of the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park.

According to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), the threat of a landslide near Wiseman Creek is increasing due to a forecasted thunderstorm in the area.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the BC Interior earlier today.

Residents living the above residences are being advised about the potential threat to life and/or property.

“(The evacuation alert) is intended to give you time to be ready for a possible evacuation,” explains the CSRD.

“Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an evacuation, however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.”

Sicamous could see some heavy rainfall tonight as much of the Shuswap remains under the thunderstorm watch.
