Sun Peaks will be expanding its existing sport centre thanks to $6 million in Federal Gas Tax funding.
The municipality said the improved Sun Peaks Centre will include a multi-purpose indoor facility capable of hosting up to 3,000 participants, which will allow the community to host concerts, large sporting and recreational events and large trade shows, which will help address the “seasonality challenges” the resort community faces.
The Federal Gas Tax Fund will provide $6 million toward the estimated construction value of $7.1 million. Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality said in a media release that the community has already committed $1.85 million in the ice making plant, rink and land purchase.
“For the residents of Sun Peaks, this is an important turning point,” said mayor Al Raine. “Our goal is to make Sun Peaks a strong summer and off season resort and this project gives us the tools to succeed.”
Approximately $278 million in funding is provided every year for local government infrastructure projects across B.C. through the Federal Gas Tax Fund. The Union of BC Municipalities administers the Federal Gas Tax Fund in B.C. in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
