The Orcas display is returning to the Inner Harbour today

The Orcas horticultural display will make its return to the corner of Government and Humboldt today.

Each year, the display known as “The Surfacing” is brought to life by the city’s horticulture staff in Beacon Hill Park.

Over 10,000 plants are grown from seed and hand planted to create the four metre tall and six-metre long display, featuring a mother and baby.

The City shared a video of the process from start to finish on their Instagram page.

Once complete, the baby orca weighs 1,050 lbs and the mother orca weighs 3,750 lbs.

The display has been a part of summers in the Inner Harbour since 2010, and was inspired by similar garden structures in Burnaby and Old Montreal's Mosaiculture Garden.

Each fall, it is transported back to the Beacon Hill Park nursery to winter in a greenhouse.
