What used to be old motels on Highway 97 near Leathead, has been converted into 40 supportive housing units for people in need. The Canadian Mental Health Association will operate the building. Executive Director Shelagh Turner, and Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran spoke at today's official opening.
"Providing homes with appropriate supports is fundamental to supporting health and wellness for people who may have been homeless for a long time," said Turner.
Each unit has it's own bathroom, bed and mini kitchen. A common area includes a laundry room, kitchen and lounge area. There will also be a room where people with addictions may safely consume drugs.
"I am pleased to see more homes in place for Kelowna residents struggling with homelessness, said Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran. "Heath House will provide safe, secure housing to our community members who need it most.
But if it sounds like renovating an old motel would be a low-cost option to get people into housing, the price tag may give you pause. The purchase and renovation cost $7.35 million.
