VIDEO: Classic rock morning duo signs off

On the occasion of their last broadcast together, the legendary duo of David Larsen and Tony Peyton spent some time with KelownaNow to reflect on their careers and the relationships they've built with their listeners.

"Fantastic!" answered Tony Peyton, when asked how he feels about his broadcasting career coming to an end. But he was joking, the 69-year-old was in fact a teary-eyed about putting his career to rest.

"Doing radio, working with David Larsen who is my great friend has been a singular joy of my working life," said Payton. "I am going to miss it. I know it is something that happened once and will not happen again. I have been so lucky."

The final David and Tony morning show has signed off for the last time. Larsen is pursuing another radio opportunity in another city while Payton is retiring.

"We've heard over the last week since we announced that we're leaving, a lot of people saying how much they're going to miss us," said Larsen, but he added, "I'll miss it more than the listeners will."

Larsen and Payton worked together for decades. First at Silk FM and then for the past ten years at Classic Rock station K96.3.

Payton laughs about the fact that Larsen, who was his program director at Silk FM, actually considered firing him, but ultimately decided to keep him on.

"He still considers it his worst mistake," jokes Payton.

Their secret to radio longevity?

"We just try to be ourselves, try to be natural," said Larsen.

"Be relevant, be authentic," added Payton, "because people can hear it right away if you're not."

Larsen is keeping the details of his next job a secret for now.
