Organizer and comedian David Kopp knows his comedy and he's proud of the amazing pool of talent right here in Kelowna. But when the Kelowna Comedy Festival hits the stage later this month it will showcase some of the best acts in Canada.
Kopp stopped by KelownaNow to talk about it.
The Kelowna Arts Council event will feature local comics in each of four shows over two nights. Headliners include Levi McCachen, Simon King, Sean Lacomber, and Kathleen McGee. "They're all good, just trust me, go to all four," said an enthusiastic Kopp. Lacomber is well-known from his appearances on the CBC's The Debaters. "This guy is one of the best joke writers in the country," gushed Kopp. "All the comedians look up to him."
"Levi McCachen!" exclaimed Kopp. "He packs the house. When this guy comes to town it's sold out." Kopp went on to heap praise on Simon King and Kathleen McGee.
But it's not all about the headliners cautions Kopp. He's thrilled at the quality of comedy that's coming from right here in Kelowna. "These locals," he said, "are fantastic."
Kopp said that the things that make people funny change with the times, so it's always exciting to see what the newest faces on the comedy scene are doing.
"If you watch old comedy movies from like the '70s or '80s you can see how things change," said Kopp. "Today it's being genuine. And you get shows where there is more of a human connection."
The event is June 14 and 15 at Dakoda's Comedy Lounge. Tickets are just $15 at the door.
