West Kelowna firefighters rescue man who fell through ice on Shannon Lake

West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) crews jumped into action this morning after receiving a report of a middle-aged man falling through the ice on Shannon Lake.

Eight firefighters quickly rushed to the scene and spotted the man about 20 feet offshore in the water, hanging on to the edge of the ice.

"Having dressed in specialty suits en route to the rescue, firefighters immediately entered the lake and brought the male to safety,” explained a WKFR release.

He was quickly transported to Kelowna General Hospital for treatment.

"Two days of temperatures above 10°C should leave no doubt that ice season on the valley bottoms lakes is over,” added the release.

“The public is urged to stay off the remaining ice as it quickly disappears.”

Fortunately for this man today, WKFR firefighters do a lot of training during the winter for this type of event and were able to act quickly to save a life today.
