BC Wildfire Service dealing with 3 more lightning-caused fires northeast of Kamloops

The BC Wildfire Service is remaining vigilant after thunderstorms passed through the Kamloops Fire Centre yesterday, starting numerous fires.

According to fire information officer Nicole Bonnett, in addition to two wildfires caused by lightning on Thursday, crews are now heading out to three more fires northeast of Kamloops.

Bonnett explained that yesterday's McNulty Road blaze is "under control," though crews are still dealing with the Harper Creek fire. The Barriere Lake, Crowfoot Mountain, and North of Leopold Road fires all sprouted within the past 12 hours.

"Nothing has changed for the McNulty fire," said Bonnett. "That is still the same, we are sending a crew out later today to take a look but as of yesterday, initially when the bird-dog flew over, it was reported as a single lightning strike tree on fire, and by the time the ground crew got out to the area, members of the public had knocked the tree down and put it out. We're just leaving it as under control until crews can get out there today and confirm that it has been called out."

"The Harper Creek one we have three personnel on site today and there will be a helicopter out there helping bring some gear out to the crews."

Bonnett mentioned that the three fires northeast of Kamloops could just be single tree lightning strikes.

"Those have all just popped up in the last 12 hours and they are all believed to be lightning strikes. We have crews on the way but at this point, we don't have anybody on the ground there yet."

Bonnett went on to say no air tankers have been called out yet and an official size hasn't been given for the fires.

NowMedia will update the story when more information is available.
