The Verdant Creek Fire in Alberta has forced the temporary closure of a popular mountain resort.

The Sunshine Mountain Lodge and Sunshine Meadows have been closed to assist Parks Canada in fighting the wildfire.

“Throughout the morning we have and will be checking guests out of the Sunshine Mountain Lodge,” said a statement from Banff.

“Parks Canada has asked us to temporarily close our resort to visitors, while they move into the resort to use Sunshine as a staging area to fight the Verdant Creek Fire.”

Efforts were already aided by mother nature as the area saw cooler temperatures and even some rain overnight.

The fire remains about 2.5 kilometres from Sunshine Village and 24 kilometres from the Town of Banff.

It’s estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 hectares in size as of Friday morning.

Over the hills those fires keep burning 😔 #Banff #verdantcreek #wildfire #backcountry
