The Sonoma County sheriff's department released bodycam footage on Friday, October 13th, of a harrowing rescue that took place late Sunday night and early Monday morning as wildfires continue to devastate California.
Footage shows police arriving at a home to rescue a resident as fire can be seen nearby and then follows them as they drive through flames to get to areas that required mandatory evacuation.
An officer can be seen walking around the property searching for people stuck in a dangerous situation as they work to evacuate the area as the fire spreads.
The Sonoma County Sheriff's department says that the evacuation took place in the Mark West area during the Tubbs fire, which is burning Between Calistoga and Santa Rosa.
Officers can be heard calling out for anyone who may still be on the property, eventually finding a disabled woman and lifting her into the vehicle to take her to safety. As they work to save the woman, one officer can be heard saying that the home is on fire.
Sadly, as of Sunday, October 15th, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has reported that the death toll has risen to 40 people.
There are currently 15 large wildfires burning across the state of California, with an estimated 217,566 acres burned, and 5,700 structures destroyed.
