Andreescu and Auger-Aliassime vault into round of 16 at home tournament

The home tournament for the Canadian tennis stars begun early this week, as the National Bank Open kicked off.

Toronto hosted the women players, while Montreal had the men.

In Toronto, Andreescu survived a nervy three set match against Alize Cornet 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in second round action.

The victory was her second straight, after defeating Daria Kasatkina in the opening round.

The string of victories is a good sign for Andreescu, as she has not won back-to-back tournament matches since the Bad Homburg Open in June. She looks to ramp up ahead of the US Open, which will be taking place later this month.

The other Canadian player competing on Wednesday night was Leylah Fernandez, who fell to Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Despite the loss, it was a welcome sight to see Fernandez compete again, as this was her first tournament action since the French Open in May, where she suffered a stress fracture in her foot.

In Montreal, the sole Canadian left standing after the first round was Felix Auger-Aliassime after both Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil dropped their openers.

Auger-Aliassime had a tough matchup against Japanese Yoshi Nishioka in the second round.

It took a stunning backhand winner for the Canuck to steal the first set.

He followed that up with a 6-4 triumph in the second set to punch his ticket to the round of 16.

Next up for Auger-Aliasimme is a matchup against the ninth seeded Cameron Norrie, which will take place around 1:20pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Andreescu battles Qinwen Zheng at 4pm.

In upsets of the day, the first, second and third seeded male players were all eliminated.

Daniil Medvedev fell to Australian Nick Kyrgios in three sets while Tommy Paul dispatched Carlos Alcarez in a tough three-setter. Brit Jack Draper bullied third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to win his match.

On the women's side, second seed Anett Kontaveit fell to Jill Techmann in straight sets. The 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams also lost to Belinda Bencic in what is sure to be one of her last tournaments, after announcing her plans to retire earlier this week.
