The Victoria Royals will host the Tri-City Americans for the first two games of Round 2 of the 2018 WHL Playoffs on Friday, April 6th and Saturday, April 7th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena.
These two teams have never before met in the postseason.
During the regular season, the Royals held a record of 2-1-1-0 in four games versus Tri-City.
The Americans advanced to the second round well rested, after a 4-0 clean series sweep against the Kelowna Rockets.
For the Royals, however, they battled in a competitive and grueling seven game series against the Vancouver Giants, which required a game 6 OT thriller and another one-goal game in game 7.
Victoria was victorious in the growing rivalry after a 4-3 regulation win on home ice on Tuesday night.
Victoria Royals’ Captain Matthew Phillips was named the WHL’s first star of the opening round of the playoffs. In the Royals’ seven-game series, Phillips recorded a total of 16 points (6g-10a) which set the franchise record for most points in a single series. The Calgary Flames’ signed prospect also sits tied for first in league’s playoff scoring race with Lethbridge Hurricanes’ forward Brad Morrison.
The Royals’ penalty kill saw success in the first round of the playoffs as the club went 16 for 18 (88.9%), which is the best mark in the league during the post-season. At home, the club went a perfect 6 for 6 on the penalty kill.
