Over 20 temperature records eclipsed as heat wave scorches BC

It's officially sunscreen season in B.C. as a blanket of heat covers several regions across the province.

According to Environment Canada, several record high temperatures marks were eclipsed on Thursday, with thermometres pushing well past the 30-degree mark.

The hottest spot in Canada on Thursday was Warfield, B.C. in the southern Interior where the mercury hit 41°C.

Several more heat records were set in the southern Interior on Thursday, being part of the 24 total new records set for the date:

  • Kelowna reached 37.8°C, surpassing the record of 37°C set back in 1978.
  • Kamloops reached 40.8°C, breaking the mark of 37.8°C recorded in 1898.
  • Vernon tied the record of 35.4°C, originally set in 2013.
  • Merritt reached 36.8°C, eclipsing the 1981 record of 35.5°C.
  • Cache Creek hit a scorching mark of 41°C, knocking off the old record of 37.6°C set in 1978.

There's potential for even more records to fall today, with several heat warnings in effect across southern B.C., including Metro Vancouver, Kamloops and Kelowna.
