Severe thunderstorm watch issued in the South Thompson

Kamloops residents may want to stay indoors this afternoon.

According to Environment Canada, a severe thunderstorm watch has been put in place for the South Thompson. Conditions are favourable for the development of storms that can produce strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop in the region this afternoon. In the evening, clouds should roll on to the Okanagan.

"Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away," wrote Environment Canada. "Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads."
