Weather warnings are lighting up Environment Canada’s maps right now

Canada is really living up to its reputation as a bitterly cold northern nation right now.

According to Environment Canada, there are currently over a hundred weather warnings in place coast to coast for either extreme cold or snowfall.

The map displays weather warnings in red, statements in grey, and watches in yellow, with some provinces such as Manitoba and Ontario being completely blanketed red statements.

Extreme cold warnings make up the vast majority of red statements on the map and those warnings are only issued when temperatures reach levels that could cause hypothermia or frostbite.

On the east coast, much of the Maritimes is covered by grey statements, most which warn of yet another nasty winter storm forecast.

Local news outlets are claiming the storm, expected to hit Friday night, will be a "show stopper" potentially bringing 30 centimetres of snowfall.
