Sunrise Records has announced it will take over 70 HMV brick and mortar locations in malls across Canada.
The news comes after HMV Canada announced the closure of all their stores, nationwide.
Sunrise Records currently has 9 stores in Ontario. They will open locations in Metrotown in Burnaby, Winnipeg, Man., Saint Bruno, Que., and the West Edmonton Mall . The company said their other new locations will be announced in the coming days and stores will start opening in early April 2017.
“We are excited to bring Sunrise nationwide, and would like to thank all of the suppliers and landlords who worked so closely with us to allow us to be a destination for physical music in Canada,” said Sunrise Records president Doug Putman.
Sunrise said they plan to carry over 2,000 vinyl records at all locations to meet the resurgent consumer demand for vinyl. Sunrise also has a focus on supporting local independent artists by carrying their music for sale.
“We want to support independent Canadian artists more than ever,” said Putman. “We feel it’s an obligation, not to mention we love discovering talented new artists.”
Part of the expansion announcement includes a commitment from Sunrise to hire HMV employees who want to continue their career in the Canadian Music Industry.
