2023-02-16 20:45:00 2023-02-16 23:00:00 America/Vancouver Joe Nolan: Live @ The Grotto (With Special Guest Roxanne Hall) MPRO4 Entertainment presents Joe Nolan: Live @ the Grotto with special guest Roxanne Hall Doors @ 8:00 Show @ 8:45 Tickets $15 This is a 19+ event. Heralded by the Globe & Mail, No Depression, and other publications as a roots rock wunderkind and a rising cult hero, Joe Nolan is a mysterious artist with an illustrious career. Having recorded with JUNO award winning producers Colin Linden and Hawksley Workman, he won several Cobalt Prize songwriting awards at the Maple Blues Awards, earned a handful of BreakOut West nominations, as well as a Canadian Folk Music Award nod for Contemporary Roots Album Of The Year for his 2020 release, Drifters. Influenced by roots-music gentry like Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams and Bob Dylan, Nolan reflects on his vagabond lifestyle that takes him from his hometown city of Edmonton, to festivals and venues spread throughout Canada's peaks and valleys. A typical year will see him playing anywhere from 150 - 200 shows; he is a true workhorse and road dog. Often framed as a lone wolf, Nolan self-produced Lost Verses, but called upon some friends to elevate the album. Key tracks feature Sarah Pagé on harp (Leif Vollebekk, The Barr Brothers), LA's COULOU on trumpet and sister Nataya Nolan on background vocals. “A remarkable collection of slow-burning melancholia.” ~Exclaim “Nolan is raw talent through and through.” ~No Depression “Nolan’s thing is taking off, and it is strong.” ~Globe & Mail “The Edmonton singer-songwriter will try to sweep you off your feet with his woozy ditties, groggy vocals and lyrics about the rush of lust, the vagaries of love, and late-night/early-morning drives.” ~Edmonton Journal “Viewing the world from a battered heart and through beautifully bloodshot, half-mast eyes.” ~Calgary Herald “This is one twister you won’t mind getting caught up in.” ~New Canadian Music “You’ve been looking for just this: a warmth against January’s sting, a voice for every kind of heartache, a reason to be excited about local music. Joe Nolan is your man.” ~The Gateway The Blue Grotto 319 Victoria Street [email protected]
