Explore What's Behind Moul Falls

Location: Moul Falls in Wells Gray Provincial Park near Clearwater, B.C.

Directions we followed:

You can reach Wells Gray Provincial Park via Clearwater Valley Road, a paved access road, also known as the Wells Gray Corridor. You can also take the Clearwater River Road, a rough gravel road on the west side of Clearwater River.

Both roads extend north from the community of Clearwater.

Wells Gray Provincial Park has many hikes and activities for you to enjoy, including 20 waterfalls! If you remember in my last column I highlighted Helmcken Falls, the fourth tallest waterfall in Canada.

Sticking with my trip to Wells Gray Provincial Park, Moul Falls is just as magnificent as Helmcken Falls, and the trail offers a moderate hike that is perfect for families with older children.

This hike, which is one of the more popular hiking trails in Wells Gray Provincial Park, is roughly one hour in each direction on a well kept trail that has Grouse Creek running right beside it. I would recommend being extra careful for the last 2 kms because there is a steeper descent with some stairs to the bottom, but it is well worth it!

Once at the bottom you have a fantastic view of Moul Falls and the canyon that surrounds it. What makes Moul Falls extra special is it offers you the option of walking behind it! There’s nothing more refreshing than the splash of cold water on a hot summer day.

If you would prefer not to get wet, I suggest bringing a windbreaker or a long sleeve shirt that will keep you dry while you’re walking behind the falls. Once around Moul Falls, there is a cave wall allowing you to explore around the rocks. It honestly feels like you’re in another world.

Hike difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 6 km round trip (1 hour each way)

Attire needed:

Hiking shoes

Backpack with water/snacks

Whistle/bear spray/bear bell (I always have my bear bell on my pack just as a precaution)

I highly recommend this short hike. Not only do you get to enjoy some pretty amazing views, but you get to walk behind a waterfall, which is exciting and fun for everyone.

I hope you enjoy the hike as much as we did!
