In Focus | Cailey Watters

Meet Cailey, born and raised in Kamloops! Cailey is a teacher candidate at TRU, in the sciences, and owns her own photography company. She loves her hometown, the outdoors, and her dog - who sure is cute! She specializes in portraits and is totally okay with third wheeling; she enjoys capturing people in love.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I’m born and raised in Kamloops! I decided to stay here when I set off to university and I’m grateful to call this place my hometown.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
Oh gosh, this will make me sound pretty anti-social and like I have no friends… but 100% my dog, Gus. I got him a couple years ago and, not a word of a lie, he’s my best friend. We go on countless adventures together and he’s always by my side.

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why? Ladies Only Fitness. It’s basically my second home and is such a warm and welcoming environment. Delrae makes the gym an overall fun and enjoyable place to be at and I’m so blessed to be able to go to a locally-owned gym!

Describe yourself in one word.
Vibrant.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Oregon Coast. My family did an RV trip down there quite a few years ago and I’ve been itching to get back ever since.

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
HIKING! We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful area and have the opportunity to explore the variety of trails Kamloops has to offer. Gus doesn’t mind this activity either. :)

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
As a teen working as a cashier, I asked a lady in her late senior years if I could see her I.D. when she came in to buy a whip cream cartridge. Long story short, I definitely made her day, however I felt pretty silly!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
This is a tough one. I’m constantly being inspired by those around me. My parents and family have been my biggest inspiration and have pushed me to get a good education and have a positive impact in the world. I have such an amazing support team and owe them everything!

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
I have so many! But my absolute favourite experience as a child was camping at Shuswap Lake. To this day, there is no feeling in the world that comes close to the freedom I felt riding my bike around the campsite where we had a spot for so many summers. Shuswap Lake will forever hold a huge place in my heart, like I know it does to so many people from Kamloops.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Biology and I am now a Teacher Candidate in TRU’s Bachelor of Education (Secondary) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Degree program. I will graduate from this program at the end of June 2019 and be qualified to be a high school science teacher. Teaching has always been a large passion of mine and has felt natural to pursue as a career. I hope to inspire young and influential adolescents to become contributing members of society and in the long run, be a small part of helping to bridge the gap between women and STEM careers. Science is the future vehicle of innovation and SO are our youth!

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
The price of DQ blizzards. But more seriously – for people to be more accepting. You only live one life, and some people waste it hating and judging on others around them.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Ooh I don’t know if I want to give up my secret place! It’s a trail in Valleyview. I’ve hiked it more times than I can count and it’s Gus and my #1 fav place.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
MORE DOG FRIENDLY PLACES!

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
What’s not to love? It has the perfect small-town vibe and the people here are wonderful.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
- RV trip around all of Canada AND the United States
- Sky dive
- Own a place out at Shuswap Lake (this is more of a life goal but is the most important to me!)

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I used to take piano and singing lessons and my sister taught me how to play guitar. I also love to bake but I am a terrible cook!

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Instagram: @MomentsbyCailey
Facebook: @MomentsbyCailey

What is the name of your business/organization?
Moments by Cailey

Why did you get into/start this business?
If I’m being entirely honest (and corny), the business kind of just found me. I’m just doing what I love and making a business out of it! It’s been a dream come true.

What is the goal of your business?
I want to immerse myself into wedding, couples and boudoir photography. My goal is to create an unforgettable experience that allows my clients to look back on their images and remember exactly how they were feeling at that moment in time.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Balance.

What do you always find yourself saying?
One of my clients teases me because during shoots I apparently repeatedly say “One sec, I’m just gunna SNEAK over here.”

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Don’t take life so seriously! Love the people around you for who they are and just soak up every moment of this crazy, beautiful life!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Ellen DeGeneres! No explanation needed.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
You’re financially supporting an individual in your community, while making their dreams come true.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Starting my business and deciding to go into education. It feels good to be pursuing two careers that I feel so passionate about.

Give someone you think that deserves a shout out and explain why!
My photography mentor, Sam Gagnon! She is the owner of Stormy Morning Expressions and has helped me with everything I know. I wouldn’t be where I’m at if it wasn’t for her friendship and guidance.

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Alaysha Vander Linden with Linden Co. Social
