In Focus | Carlee Aitchison

Meet Carlee. Carlee is to the Kamloops community, she moved here just over a year ago. She is passionate about fitness and owns The Movement Mechanic and Tournament Capital Strength & Conditioning.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I am from Lethbridge, I lived in Toronto for four years while going to Chiropractic College from 2013-2017 and moved to Kamloops September 2017.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband, Kent. I can tell him anything and he can always put a smile on my face :)

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Lemongrass. My husband and I got into the restaurant scene in Toronto and this reminds us of one of our favourite places to go!

Describe yourself in one word.
Thorough.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Somewhere warm where I could go surfing!

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Playing Spikeball in the summer with friends!

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I recently realized I’ve never shovelled a driveway. Thanks Dad and Husband!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Talking to Chiropractors in 2012 and realizing how much they enjoyed their work. I talked to three different chiropractors. They were each very different, but all extremely supportive of me going to chiropractic college.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
My family belonged to a Golf and Country Club with an outdoor pool. I was at that pool rain or shine and really did love it there!

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I am a sponsor of Kamloops Classic Swimming. They have been very supportive of my business since we moved to Kamloops.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Nutrition is incredibly important to me, so I’d love to spread the word about how you can make healthy choices everyday.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Riverside park, I really enjoyed Music in Park this last year!

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
I’d like to see even more support of youth sport and fitness in our community. I really feel like some kids are missing out on activities for the wrong reasons.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
It's proximity to some great outdoor activities. Skiing, lakes and hot summers!

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Get a puppy
2. Travel to Bora Bora
3. Travel to Australia

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I have my motorcycle license.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Instagram: @movement.mechanic and @tcsc_naturalstrengthcrossfit
Facebook: The Movement Mechanic and TCSC - Home of Natural Strength CrossFit

What is the name of your business/organization?
The Movement Mechanic & Tournament Capital Strength & Conditioning

Why did you get into/start this business?
My now Husband and I started Crossfit in 2008. I suffered from shoulder and back injuries with misguided training in my early twenties, which motivated me to become a trainer with the goal of preventing injuries. My injuries were mismanaged, which then further motivated me to become a therapist. I chose chiropractic school as I believed it would give me the best tools to give those who become injured the support, guidance and education that they need.

What is the goal of your business?
I’d like to give those with injuries guidance and education, along with empowering individuals to care for themselves. The best thing about owning a gym and clinic is that I get to do both!

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
I am a bit introverted, modest and quiet. I struggle with self promotion. I find it difficult to talk myself up even when I am doing it to help others.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Since I work in the fitness/health/health care industry I think it must be learn to control all of your joints and move them everyday OR eat more vegetables!

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Focus on what you CAN do today, make lists and crush it!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Ellen Degeneres. I think it would be a fun day! I also think she has a good message 'be kind to one another.'

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It is a great way to connect with and support people living right in my community.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Finishing my Doctor of Chiropractic Degree.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Kelsey Grimm – she gives her time when needed even though I know she is busy!

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Kelsey Grimm
