Meet Ginger Turley. Ginger has lived in Kamloops for 25 years. She is a passionate make up artist and enthusiastic about giving back in her community.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I was born and raised in Merritt, BC but I have called Kamloops my home for the past 25 years.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband Don because he knows me so well and is always ready for an adventure.
What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Danielle's Silver and Gold because they give you their undivided attention and put a lot of thought into helping you choose the perfect item from their store.
Describe yourself in one word.
Passionate.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Maui because it holds a lot of great memories for me as it was our best family vacation.
What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Checking out local bookstores because I love discovering new authors and immersing myself in a good book.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I get embarrassed every time I butcher a popular saying. For example, "You hit the nail with the hammer."
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Becoming a mom hands down! My children inspire me every day and I have learned so much about myself since becoming a parent. They are my biggest supporters and push me every day to reach for the stars and dream big, just as I do for them!
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Growing up in a small town, my favourite childhood memory is playing with my siblings, (there's four of us) and all the neighbourhood kids. We went from house to house, playing tag, riding bikes and of course waiting for the sound of the ice cream truck! We always felt safe and we were carefree as our only concern was making it home before dinner or before it got dark (whichever came first).
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I volunteered for 5 years as Vice Chair of my children's school PAC and have volunteered my time as a one to one reading coach. This year, I was a part of the Canadian Liver Foundation's liver health awareness campaign as well. I believe in random acts of kindness and paying it forward so I try to practice that within the community as much as I can without requiring anything in return. My heart truly feels full when I am helping someone else.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
More kindness in the world. There is too much judgement and not enough love and empathy towards one another.
Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
My bedroom is my personal sanctuary where I can be alone in my thoughts, or enjoy a good book or movie. A close second would be any local bookstore.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
I would love to bridge the gap between the north shore and south shore. There has always been a lack of cohesiveness there and seeing more businesses supported in the north shore would be great.
What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The people of course! Kamloopsians are so friendly and accepting and Kamloops has all the small town charm with the perks of a bigger city.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1) Travel to Europe
2) Learn Spanish
3) Design my dream home
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I love to bake and I love to dance... sometimes at the same time!
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Facebook and Instagram.
What is the name of your business/organization?
Ginger Turley Makeup Artist.
Why did you get into/start this business?
I love my job as the Retail Manager of MAC Cosmetics Kamloops. The decision to promote my freelance business came about after numerous customers stressed the desire to have me on location for their events or on my days off. So now I can help them all!
What is the goal of your business?
To help people of all ages feel more confident and teach them the tricks of the trade that will help inspire their own creativity. I also love being a part of some of the most important days of someone's life, and I feel honoured to have that opportunity.
What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
I am a perfectionist at heart so I need to learn to manage the expectations I place on myself.
What do you always find yourself saying?
Seriously?! (No really that's what I actually say.)
Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Treat others how you want to be treated and be kind always.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Mario Dedivanovic, world renowned makeup artist. I would want to learn all his techniques!
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
To support local businesses and support their entrepreneurial goals while strengthening the Kamloops economy.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Maintaining a full time job while raising two beautiful, intelligent and above all, kind children.
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My big sister Jug Lalli who has been like a second mom to me and has always been there for me through thick and thin. I can always count on her and her friends would say the same thing about her. One of the most self-less people I know and love.
My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Chelsea Mann of Century 21 Desert Hills Realty. She's the best realtor in town because she genuinely cares about her clients and is great at her job!
