Meet Jared Doherty. Jared was born and raised in the city of Kamloops. He enjoys getting out on the open road and photographing whatever interesting spots he may find.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kamloops?
I have lived here my whole life.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My girlfriend Lindsay and her dog Louie! She's a very positive influence and we talk about anything. Louie is just a lovable loaf.
What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Barnacle Records, Eatsamore, Red Collar, The Book Place... where interesting conversations take place! And Jacob's Noodle and Cutlet.
Describe yourself in one word.
passionate.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Japan, to try some amazing ramen and experience a very different way of life.
What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Going for a drive out of town in any direction and taking photos.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I'm glad I don't keep track of these... I'm clumsily knocking things over on a daily basis.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Getting to be a part of and watching the music scene and community grow in Kamloops. It's a privilege to be able to play and attend shows and events amongst so many supportive, hardworking and creative people.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Playing road hockey with my older brother and kids in the neighbourhood, and going to the salmon run and the wildlife park. Watching my dad play music at Sunnybrae coffee houses.
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Donations to Kids Cancer Care, as well as the occasional background music for yoga in the park in the summer.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would like everyone to seek out a thorough understanding and willingness to learn about things before passing judgment, including personal preconceptions and thought patterns as they relate to others'. I think this attitude would lead to less intolerance and hate while making room for more compassion and kindness.
Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
Any quiet spot beside the river.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
I would like to see the music scene continue to grow, local shows to start selling out and cement Kamloops' reputation as a noteworthy tour stop. Kamloops has as much talent as anywhere and I hope people can get behind local acts as much as cover bands.
What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The wide variety of friendly, hardworking and collaboratively minded people. As well, the scenery and fact that we get to enjoy all 4 seasons.
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Live in some different places! Hopefully on a large farm at one point.
2. See a bunch of the world touring and playing music.
3. Work up the courage to most-likely bomb at a stand-up comedy open mic.
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm an amateur sourdough baker and always trying to perfect the process of making a nice loaf.
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
instagram: @jradjradjrad
What is the name of your business/organization?
I've recently released a solo album under my own name, as well as being a member of bands At Mission Dolores, Mother Sun, and Elsewhere.
Why did you get into/start this business?
I've always loved creating and performing music.
What is the goal of your business?
Connection with an audience, as well as creating a sustainable living doing what I love alongside good friends.
What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Finding balance, and overthinking things.
What do you always find yourself saying?
"Put your phone down."
Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Everything in moderation
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Stu McKenzie of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. I'd like to pick his brain about songwriting and recording and just hang out. If Neil Young was there too that would be cool.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It puts your money in the hands of hardworking small business owners who are out on a limb providing a service to their local community! Rather than Wal-mart...
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Any time I'm able to release new music. It's special to have something to listen back to that recalls a time or place in your life, it's like a time capsule. The fact that other people also might listen to it is a crazy bonus.
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My mom! She's run her own daycare for 30 years and has been a second mother to countless children throughout. Her work ethic is inspiring, and also it can't be easy to look after 7 kids at a time...
