In Focus | Kristen Butler

Meet Kristen. She's from Armstrong and has lived in Kamloops for 11 years.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband, Corey. After almost 10 years together he still makes me laugh, challenges me, supports me, and drives me a little bit crazy every day!

What is your favourite local store in Kamloops and why?
Castles and Cottages. I know I'll always have a unique shopping experience and find something I didn't even know I wanted!

Describe yourself in one word.
Shy-extrovert.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
It's snowing outside... So anywhere warm would do. But Egypt is next up on the travelling agenda!

What is your favourite activity in Kamloops?
Hiking. We have so many amazing trails in town and its great to get out and explore our town.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
I was five years old and went to meet the principle of my new school. He had a quarter on his desk and I took it. Mom busted me later that day and made me return it. I was so horrified that I had to face him and return it. Lesson learned tho!

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Becoming a mom. Even though it is so cliche, words can't describe the moment you suddenly become a parent to these helpless little babies with a whole life in front of them. I have two boys two years old and two months old. It is my goal in life to raise strong men who are adventurous, respect other people, and live a life with integrity. They won't be that way unless I model that life for them. And so by default, they are challenging me daily to be a better version of myself.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Flying with my Dad. My dad built planes as a hobby and we had an airplane strip out our front yard. Plenty of childhood memories watching my dad in the shop tinker with his planes and then going up in the air with him!

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
In the past, I have done a lot of volunteer work through my nursing career and with Kamloops Fire and Rescue. This Included a trip to Nicaragua to help with some humanitarian work there. At the stage of life, I am in now with two young kids, volunteering looks different. It means donating breastmilk to moms in need, cooking meals for people, donating clothes to women shelters. It's seeing a need and trying to meet it as I am able.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
Racism.

Where would you sneak away to in Kamloops to spend some time alone?
It's not really alone, but I love to sneak in a good workout. I always feel like a better human after I have taken that 'me' time.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kamloops and why?
More safe places and events for kids to play at. I feel this is a part of Kamloops that is lacking, we need more options for our kids.

What do you think makes Kamloops great?
The people. Our community is fantastic and 'Kamloopsians' genuinely care about each other.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
I don't really have a bucket list. I'm always dreaming big things for myself and my family, but still, strive to be present for the moment.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook and Instagram.

What is the name of your business/organization?
I am a skincare consultant with Rodan and Fields.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I've always made an educated decision on the products I use, and I wanted the option to use dermatological grade skin care every day. Now, this business means the ability to dream bigger personally, and support others as they strive for new goals.

What is the goal of your business?
I want to instil confidence in others through having there skin issues disappear. An additional bonus is growing a team of incredible individuals who want to create an additional income for their family and be a part of a supportive and exciting community

What do you always find yourself saying?
'Max, please don't do that' Mom life!

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Be present.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
I think we need to support our local community and its members. This is part of what makes Kamloops great, we lift each other up and support each other's dreams. One of the ways we can do that is by supporting those local establishments and businesses.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Again, cliche. But giving birth to my boys. There is something incredibly empowering about bringing life into the world. No words can describe the moment of meeting your child for the first time, and the instant title of becoming a parent.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Joanna at Mighty Oak Midwifery. She has long been a voice for empowering women and providing birth support in Kamloops and has created a lot of positive change with regards to maternal care

My choice for the KamloopsBCNow In Focus spotlight is:
Arnica Crawsay. Owner of Sugar and Spice Beauty Bar.
