Hungry beaver causes power outage

Stories don’t get more Canadian than this...

A number of residents in Saskatchewan received a shock last week after a hard working beaver gnawed through a power pole and caused power outages for much of the Cypress Hills and Maple Creek areas.

SaskPower, the principal electric utility in Saskatchewan, tweeted about the incident.

“Crews were busy safely restoring power in the Maple Creek area on Sat - the culprit - a beaver!,” read the tweet from SaskPower.

According to one person commenting on the same post uploaded to Facebook, the beaver caused power outages for residents over an hour away from Maple Creek.

“We're an hour away from Maple Creek and our power was out because of this too! The SP message said outage was ‘due to transmission structure down in a slough and replacements are en route,’” commented Audrey Burton. “We have lots of trouble with mice and moles chewing the phone lines apart in the pedestals, now beavers chewing the power poles, I think Mother Nature's family is trying to send us a message!!”

Fortunately, power was successfully restored in a timely fashion.
