When you were a baby, it was all about you. Feeding you, bathing you, you know… keeping you alive.
When you were a toddler, it was really all about you. Still feeding you, teaching you, sometimes bathing you, minimizing risks to keep you breathing and happy.
When you were in grade school, it was still all about you. Rationalizing with you, teaching you different things, creating boundaries, and by now it was a little less about keeping you alive but still fed well because you’re still finding your way.
When you graduated from high school and moved on to do the university thing or work, it’s about you but in a different way. You’re now in charge of who you want to be, staying alive and eating well.
It all up to you to decide how you want to adult. There might be someone worrying about you and checking in on you but now you’re figuring out what you’re going to do on your own. The difference is that you start to care about other people like your friends and other experiences.
Now wherever you’re at along the journey of adulthood, this applies to you. Yes, you decide who you hang out with and what you spend your time on. You make the call on going out to the bar or the movies or for dinner and where.
You even take into consideration other people’s opinions and amidst all that, you may not have a clue that it really is all about you.
But then you wake up.
Bit by bit, you open your eyes.
Slowly and surely, you start to get it.
You become aware that the world works in a lot of positive, negative and even wild ways.
You start to understand there is so much going on inside of you, around you and far away from you that you look at things differently.
Something continually bubbles up inside of you.
Something you can’t ignore.
It’s you.
It’s your power and your voice.
It’s a new view of your life.
It’s now not all about you.
Once you wake up to this idea that you have the power to impact your community, the people and the world around you, you will understand it’s not all about you. You can’t go back to sleep. You’re alive and breathing. Yes, you’ve made it this far. And you know there’s more.
On a deeper level you know you can give back to your community by volunteering or raising money and that feels amazing. It’s up to you to put yourself out there with your brilliant mind and ideas.
It’s also up to you about what you put in your body and how you choose to move your body. You know you can choose how you communicate to yourself + your partner and that’s how you’ll communicate to everyone around you. You look in the mirror and see where your blindspots are.
You get that this is the best kind of work. You make it about your role in the world not what the world can give you to feel some kind of dopamine rush.
When you make this life about giving, - yes give to yourself first; you know this is where your power comes from - you make it about serving others and using your voice to do good. You see this as a great place to live.
