There have been a number of bobcat, lynx and cougar sightings in the Okanagan over the winter.
Just last week a family of cougars was put down in Penticton after becoming too comfortable hunting in residential areas.
A video posted yesterday on YouTube titled "Bobcat in Kelowna Lower Mission" shows another curious cat.
Walking along the top of a fence in this Lower Mission backyard is what appears to be a bobcat.
The video shows the bobcat slinking its way along a residential fence.
British Columbia Conservation Officer Service says residents shouldn’t be alarmed by the animals’ presence.
Conservation Officer Terry Myroniuk says bobcats on the valley bottom aren’t that uncommon this time of year, especially with the amount of snow we’ve had this winter.
Unlike lynx, bobcats don’t have a big puffy footprint, meaning they don’t do as well in deep snow. With more powder at higher elevations right now the small wild cats are venturing further into the valley.
But Myroniuk says that’s not really a problem. The Okanagan is traditional bobcat habitat anyway, and the wild cats are small enough they they don’t pose much of a threat to humans.
