Groundhog Day took a crazy turn in Nova Scotia this year.
After Shubenacadie Sam predicted an early spring, he was left to run around his enclosure.

Members of the media were allowed inside the enclosure as well, including CBC’s Brett Ruskin.
Ruskin was filming Sam as he roamed around the pen, but was forced to jump into action when the groundhog made a break for it.
In an attempt to escape, Sam started quickly climbing up the fence of the enclosure and was inches from escape when Ruskin jumped into action.

The CBC reporter sprinted over while still filming and got a hand on the small animal before it made it to freedom.
In the process, however, Sam gave Ruskin a good chomp on the hand, drawing some blood in the process.

According to Sam’s handlers, Ruskin shouldn’t need any kind of shot after the incident and he’s not the first to be bitten by the groundhog.
