Transportation Canada has issued a recall notice for more than 33,000 Hyundai vehicles as a defect could cause the engine to fail while in motion.
The recall notice affects 33,786 Hyundai Sonatas that are model years 2011 and 2012. On certain vehicles the engine crankshaft may not have been properly machined to remove metallic debris during manufacturing. According to Transport Canada, if the debris is not completely removed from the crankshaft’s oil passages, it can be forced into the connecting rod oiling passages, restricting oil flow.
If the vehicle continues to be driven with a worn connecting rod bearing, it could fail and cause an engine stall while the vehicle is in motion. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the engine assembly. Hyundai will also increase the warranty on affected engines to 10 years/200,000 kilometres for owners of the 2011 and 2012 Sonatas.
