Health Canada has issued a warning after finding dozens of Spirit Halloween stores selling products the company previously agreed to recall.
The agency says that, on several occasions, Spirit Halloween has agreed to voluntarily stop selling or recall products that do not meet Canadian health and safety regulatory requirements.
However, the agency says it recently visited 45 of the company's stores and found that 23 of them - more than half of those visited - were continuing to sell dangerous products.
In its warning to consumers, Health Canada lists seven products it says Spirit Halloween shouldn’t be selling. Five of them (Spirit Halloween 100 Purple String Lights, Spirit Halloween 100 Orange String Lights, Spirit Halloween Feather Witch Hat, Spirit Feather White Angel Wings and Spirit Feather Black Angel Wings) are identified as potential fire hazards. The other two ( Spirit Halloween Pumpkin Tiki Torch and Spirit Halloween Skull Tiki Torch) are missing a hazard label.
Yesterday evening, KelownaNow visited Spirit Halloween’s Kelowna location and did not see any of those products on display.
Cheryl Holmes, a consignee of the Kelowna location, said she couldn’t talk about the recall, but did say “we alway comply” with Health Canada.
KelownaNow reached out to several Spirit Halloween representatives, but at the time of publication has received no responses.
Health Canada does not specify which stores it found selling the dangerous products, the agency says it has requested an action plan from Spirit Halloween to outline how it will “address these compliance issues.”
“The Department is also following up on additional products to assess compliance and may take further actions, if required. Health Canada also continues to inspect stores and may seize non-compliant products, if identified,” the agency’s warning says.
It says consumers should check the Recalls and Safety Alerts Database for any products that were previously purchased. Consumers with a product that has been recalled should follow the actions described in the recall notice.
