What do the names of Canada's provinces really mean?

North America is home to a rich mixture of cultures as well as languages and the names of its states, provinces and territories reflect this.

Many of the names that represent places throughout the countries derive from indigenous languages of the Americas.

International travel company Expedia has released a “New World” map of the countries, featuring the literal translations of the places we call home.

“Many [of the names] derive from indigenous languages of the Americas. Alaska for example is derived from the Yupik word, “Alyeska,” an idiom from the Aleut people and Kansas comes from the Native American Sioux language,” Expedia explains on their website.

It's interesting to see what the names of our well-known cities would look like is truly translated.

Calgary, for example, translates to the slightly less catchy "Land of Princess Luise Caroline Alberta."

The map offers a unique insight into the forgotten history of the continent and may even teach something new about your home.
