Two styles of gun safes sold at Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops have been recalled because of problems with their locking mechanisms.
The recall is for the Cabela’s Four Gun Safe with biometric lock and Cabela’s Quick Access Safe with biometric lock sold from September 2020 to February 2023.
“The biometric gun safes pose a serious safety hazard and risk of death caused by a programming feature that can allow unauthorized access to the safes,” reads the recall notice from Health Canada.
The notice adds that the problem with the safes is that consumers believe they have programmed the biometric feature when in fact the safe remains in the default open mode.
When in the default mode, the safes can be accessed by anyone, including children, allowing firearms and other hazardous contents to be removed.
As of Oct. 20, there have been two reports of incidents in Canada, with no injuries reported.
In the United States, the safe’s manufacturer has received one report of a death and 37 reports of the safe's biometrics being accessed by unpaired fingerprints.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the biometric reader in the recalled products, remove the batteries and contact Fortress Safe to receive a free replacement safe,” explains the recall.
