Alberta ‘prison escapee’ and 'accomplice' arrested in Revelstoke

A woman who had been on the run for several weeks after allegedly being fraudulently released from jail in Alberta has been arrested in British Columbia.

The RCMP says 24-year-old Mackenzie Dawn Hardy, who was “inadvertently released due to fraud” in late April, was arrested by the Revelstoke RCMP on Tuesday, May 27.

According to police, the “prison escapee” was arrested alongside “accomplice” David Joseph Wood, 27, as they walked away from a stolen vehicle.

Social media posts from Hardy indicate that Wood is her boyfriend.

The Red Deer RCMP was advised on April 29 that Hardy had been mistakenly released from the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre four days earlier.

Police say an investigation determined Wood conspired with Hardy and assisted with her fraudulent release, and an arrest warrant was issued for him on May 23.

Following his arrest, Wood was charged with assisting the escape of a prisoner, identity fraud and uttering a forged document.

On top of Hardy’s outstanding warrants, she has additionally been charged with escaping lawful custody.

Her previous charges included possession of stolen property, impaired driving and driving without insurance or registration.

“Both Hardy and Wood have been taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody,” an RCMP release explained.

“They will be transported back to Alberta where they will be brought before the Alberta Courts regarding future court dates.”

During her time on the run, Hardy posted several videos to her TikTok, created a GoFundMe that raised only $50 and even did an interview with Global News from an undisclosed location.

She seemingly taunted police in some videos, although denied that fact when speaking with Global News, and called her release a "gift from God" in one post.
