A new report has listed Calgary and Vancouver as the most liveable cities in North America and among the top 10 worldwide.
The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest annual Global Liveability Index placed Calgary in a tie for fifth place with Geneva, Switzerland, and Vancouver in a tie for seventh place with Sydney, Australia.
“The index ranks the liveability of 173 cities across five key categories, including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure,” reads the EIU’s website.
“This year’s survey saw a rise in average scores, driven by gains in healthcare and education across developing countries, although this has been largely offset by declines in scores for several top-tier cities.”
Calgary and Vancouver were the only North American cities in the top 10 of the ranking, with other Canadian municipalities seeing their scores affected by the housing crisis, including Toronto, which moved down to 12th place.
Overall, Calgary scored 96.8 on the index with perfect marks for stability, healthcare and education, but a 90 for culture and environment, and a 96.4 for infrastructure.
Vancouver scored 96.6 overall with perfect marks for healthcare and education, but 95 for stability, 92.9 for infrastructure and 97.2 for culture and environment.
The top city on the list was Vienna, Austria, with perfect marks in each category except a 93.5 in culture and environment.
