Canada Post presents ‘final offers’ to postal workers union

The ball is now in the court of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

Canada Post says it presented “final offers” to the CUPW today, which “protect what’s most important to employees while making important enhancements” to the company’s recent offers.

The new offers include a signing bonus of $1,000 or $500 for employees, depending on whether they are part of the Urban or Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) units.

The Crown corporation says it would improve cost of living allowances for both units, triggering them at a lower inflation threshold of 7.16% instead of 13.59%.

And for the Urban unit, the offer would include the removal of Canada Post’s ability to require that employees work mandatory overtime.

Management’s nearly 14% wage offer remains unchanged, with a scheduled increase of 6% in year one, 3% in year two and 2% in both year three and four for all employees.

“Canada Post also recently moved on some key sticking points in the negotiations,” a release from the Crown corporation explained.

“The company is no longer proposing a new health benefits plan, changes to employees’ post-retirement benefits or enrolling future employees in the defined contribution pension.”

Canada Post is also proposing critical changes to its delivery model to help compete in parcel delivery seven days a week to meet “the changing needs” of Canadian residents and businesses.

Another key part of negotiations is a promise to create stable and predictable part-time jobs for those looking for flexible work.

The company says part-time workers would get health and pension benefits along with scheduled and guaranteed hours, between 15-40 per week.

“The creation of part-time jobs increases the company’s delivery flexibility, especially on weekends, while ensuring that letter carriers are not required to work weekend shifts,” the Canada Post release noted.

The CUPW issued a strike notice to Canada Post early last week and workers were eligible to walk off the job as early as Friday.

However, they remain at work for now, although an overtime ban has been implemented and remains in place.

Canada Post's 2024 Annual Report was released today, which reported that the company lost $841 million before tax last year.

The company's operating loss in 2024 was nearly $1.3 billion.
