Dr. Eric Hoskins, the Ontario Health Minister who made the announcement, tweeted he was "beyond words" on learning about the death of his friends.

"Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care," said Hoskins. "A very, very sad day."

Born in Toronto in 1942, Barry Sherman was the CEO and chairman of Apotex Inc., a pharmaceutical company.

At 16 years of age, Sherman was the youngest student to enter the University of Toronto's Engineering Science program.
