The Canadian passport didn’t do as well as last year, but it was still ranked one of the most powerful in the world in a global survey.
Passport Index ranks passports from across the world on their total visa-free score, meaning how much global mobility the passport holder has.
The ranking scores are based on how many countries will give visa-free access to the passport holder.
Canada made the top ten, sitting in 6th place, tied with the U.S., Ireland, and Malaysia with a score of 154.
Canada moved down one point from last years ranking, but still ranks with some of the world's most powerful countries.
The survey found that the most powerful passport is Singapore, with a visa-free score of 159. Germany was close behind with a score of 158.
Historically, the countries that have been ranked the highest in the list have been European dominated, with Germany having led for the past two years. Singapore’s top ranking this year is attributed to Paraguays removal of visa requirements for Singaporeans.
Passport Index notes that “While Singapore quietly climbed the ranks, the US passport has fallen down since Trump took office. Most recently Turkey and the Central African Republic revoked their visa-free status to US passport holders.”
