After days of reports and tidbits of information finding their way to the media, Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially called for a federal election after asking the Governor General to dissolve Parliament on Sunday.
Canadians will head to the ballot boxes on April 28 after a five-week national campaign.
Carney announced the beginning of the election campaign at a press conference at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, one day before Parliament was set to resume after being prorogued back in January.
In his press conference, the prime minister discussed several points while focusing on the current state of affairs between Canada and the Donald Trump-led US. Carney promised to end all provincial trade barriers by Canada Day.
Canada’s newest prime minister will run in the Ottawa riding of Nepean, the Liberal Party of Canada announced on Saturday.
The Liberals have seen a resurgence in the past few months and have narrowed the Conservatives' lead in the polls, and it could be a close race between the two parties.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and Jagmeet Singh of the NDP were both in Quebec and spoke to reporters on Sunday.
