Canadians will have a say in whose face will be placed on the new $5 bill

Canadians will have a say in whose face will be placed on the new $5 bill.

On Thursday, Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz announced that the central bank is working on plans for the new bill and public consultations will be considered in the process.

The consultations will be similar to those that led to the choice of civil rights pioneer Viola Desmond for the country’s new verticle $10 bill that was released in November of 2018.

Desmond became the first Canadian woman to be featured on a regularly circulating banknote.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s first francophone prime minister, is currently featured on the $5 note.

For the new bill, Canadians will be asked to nominate any historic Canadian they think may be worthy to be on the new bill.
