Half a million bottles of Shell heavy-duty antifreeze recalled over leak test concerns

More than half a million bottles of antifreeze have been recalled by Health Canada.

The department said the Shell Rotella ELC NF Pre-diluted 50/50 Heavy Duty Antifreeze + Coolant product does not meet leak test or labelling requirements.

“Leaks from the container could result in unintentional exposure to the product and lead to serious illness or injury, including death,” Health Canada said.

It urged anyone with the product to immediately stop using it and contact Shell for a refund.

The antifreeze should be disposed of according to local hazardous waste guidelines, Health Canada explained.

According to Shell, it sold more than 520,000 bottles of the product between September 2020 and December 2023. Most were sold to commercial outlets.

As of Dec. 14, it has received no reports of incidents or injuries associated with the product in Canada.

Health Canada added: “Please note that the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibits recalled products from being redistributed, sold or even given away in Canada.”
